Salina and Yang | An Ismaili & Chinese Fusion Wedding at Palais Royale in Toronto

Fusion was the name of the game at Salina and Yang’s vibrant spring wedding at the historic Palais Royale. Known for its romantic charm and stunning views over Lake Ontario, the venue provided the perfect setting for a celebration that beautifully blended Chinese and Ismaili traditions. Friends and family gathered to witness a wedding rich in culture, love, and meaningful rituals that honoured both sides of the couple’s heritage.

To create a truly personal experience, the day incorporated both a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and the beloved Ismaili custom of stepping on the Sapatia. In this playful yet symbolic ritual, clay plates filled with lentils (representing nature’s bounty), a quarter for wealth, sugar for sweetness and harmony, and turmeric for longevity and health are broken by the couple to determine who will “rule the house.” Amid cheers and laughter from both families, Salina managed to break her Sapatia first – officially claiming the title according to tradition.

Salina and Yang’s story goes all the way back to high school, where they attended prom together as friends. Although their romance didn’t blossom until years later, it was especially meaningful to see so many of their former classmates gathered to celebrate this milestone alongside them.

We headed to the scenic Sunnyside Boardwalk for portraits. The boardwalk was alive with spring colour, from blooming tulips and daffodils to the vibrant attire of their guests. Their lifelong friends kept the atmosphere lighthearted, teasing the typically reserved couple about showing a little more PDA for the camera.

For the reception, Salina changed into a stunning white wedding gown. Since neither she nor Yang enjoys being the centre of attention, they came up with a creative way to make their first dance feel more intimate. As they danced to Yellow by Coldplay, their wedding party surrounded them in a circle while holding strands of mini star lights, creating a glowing canopy that allowed the couple to share a private moment within the celebration.

The evening continued with heartfelt speeches, including a particularly touching one from Salina. Whenever emotion and tears threatened to take over, Yang stepped in to help finish her words, adding warmth, humour, and even more affection to the moment.

The celebration wrapped up with a lively dance floor, fueled by enthusiastic guests and celebratory shots at the bar. Before the night ended, we stepped outside for a few final moonlit portraits in the crisp spring air, an unforgettable close to a day that perfectly reflected Salina and Yang’s love story and the blending of their cultures.
